How a Gate Can Increase Your Home’s Security
Break-ins are one of the most common household crimes in Australia, with hundreds of thousands of homes being broken into each year, and almost as many being subject to attempted break-ins.

Building secure boundary fences and gates, or even just repairing your existing fencing and gates, can act as a big deterrent. Research has shown that burglars are less likely to attempt a break-in if a property seems secure or there are obstacles they’ll need to overcome. For instance, if a burglar needs to climb a fence, or try to pick a lock on a gate or is faced with an automated gate, they’ll be more likely to leave your home undisturbed.
So, what fencing and gate options can help increase your home’s security while also maintaining your home’s aesthetic?
New Gates and Fences
Every house should have a fence and secure gate, even if you live in a safe or rural community. They not only help to create clear, easily identifiable borders, they create privacy and extra home security.
However, when installing a new gate or fence, there are a few things you should consider. For example, your fence shouldn’t be so high that it blocks out the sun and makes it feel like a prison, but it also shouldn’t be so low that people can easily jump over it. Shorter picket fences are fine for a front yard, but when it comes to your backyard, something higher that offers extra privacy and security will prove valuable in terms of your own comfort, but also for re-sell value and blocking out street noise and etc.
The same goes with your gates. If you have a gate separating your front yard or driveway from your backyard, you want to ensure not just anyone can walk through it. In this regard, a higher, lockable gate will come in handy.

Fence and Gate Repairs
A dilapidated fence or broken gate will provide about as much security as no fence at all. If your fence and gate are falling apart, the wood is rotting, the metal rusting, the panels are coming loose or the locks on your gate are no longer functional, it could be time to undertake some repairs.
At Perth Handyman Services, we offer fencing and gate repair services. Whether you have a wooden gate that needs to be repaired, a Colorbond fence that’s seen better days or you want a new metal gate or wrought iron fence installed, we can help.
We’re also qualified welders who can repair an existing fence or gate saving on money and not changing the look of your fence or gate. As many fences and gates fade over time if you need to replace fencing panels or a gate, the colour will not match the existing fence or gate and can look out of place. Where possible we will save the existing fence portion or gate so that there is no change in colour. However, many old colours don’t exist anymore, making it impossible to match existing colours. But don’t stress, we can also assist with re-painting any repaired fences and gates.
Finding time to undertake property repairs can be tricky, especially when you work full time and have other family responsibilities to juggle. This is where we come in. We can do the work for you, leaving you the time you need to enjoy your weekends.

5 Ways to Prepare Your Backyard for Summer Entertaining
Spring has finally sprung, but with the extra sunshine also comes the prospect of more outdoor entertaining. Is your backyard ready?
Unfortunately, the cooler months have the tendency to wreak havoc on our backyards, after all, who wants to go outside and mow the lawn when it’s freezing cold and raining outside? However, if playing the hostess/host at outdoor soirees is a big part of your summer social calendar, these tips will help you get your yard looking spick and spam in no time!
Spring Clean Your Backyard
If things have gotten a little wild in your backyard over winter, now’s the time to come in and clean up. Mow the lawn, cut back any overgrown bushes and shrubbery and clean up any debris or rubbish that you find lying around.
It’s also worthwhile to assess the current condition of your space and make any necessary repairs to furniture, garden beds or even your back deck or pergola. If they’ve sustained any damage, like beams coming loose or rotting, fix them up before entertaining season jumps into full swing.
Think About Any Renovations That Need Doing
Summer gardens are made in spring, so if you want a new deck, paving, garden beds or even an undercover area built, now’s the time to find the perfect handyman to complete the work for you.
Sort out Your Outdoor Lighting
If you have existing outdoor lighting, like fairy lights or pergola lights, check all of the globes to make sure they all work and then give them a quick dust – it’s amazing how quickly dirt and cobwebs build up on lights.
If you don’t have any outdoor lighting, it could be time to think about getting some. If you want hassle-free lighting, solar-powered lights are the way to go, but for something more permanent, you can have an electrician sort out some wiring for you and put in lamp posts or spotlights for your undercover entertaining area.
Another ambient alternative is portable outdoor lighting or path lights, which can either be battery operated or solar powered.
By sorting out your backyard’s lighting needs, you’ll be ensuring your space is functional, while also increasing its ambience and generating an atmosphere that’s perfect for entertaining.
Get Decorating
If you don’t have an undercover area outside (now could be the time to build one – or have your local handyman construct one for you!) and tend to put your furniture and décor into storage over the cooler months, now’s the time to dust it all off and bring it back outside.
If your decorative items are all still outside from last summer, pop outside and see if they need replacing (the colour may have faded or they could have been damaged over the last six months).
Once you complete each of these tasks (or at least the ones that are relevant to you) your outdoor entertaining area will be ready for all of the barbecues and parties you could possibly dream of. Give Your Poolside Fence a Makeover
The backyard pool is what makes Perth’s wonderful climate perfect. But summer after summer brings a sprinkling of tragedy, in the form of children drowned because the pool fence wasn’t up to the job. Even fences and gates that meet the latest regulations can become dilapidated and fail to perform as designed – and that’s particularly true of gates and latches, which have to self-close and self-latch. Wear and tear, or even a bit of ground subsidence, can impair a gate’s action, leaving your pool accessible to a determined toddler.
If you’ve got a nagging feeling that your pool fence might need repair or upgrading to maintain compliance, Perth Handyman Services can help. We offer a poolside gate and latch service – a “makeover” that will ensure that you enjoy the rest of the summer with peace of mind.

timber slat fence
Here we have used wood slats to create a timber screen fence at the side of house.
Often we would use a wood gate in this position but for security reasons the owner wanted a fence screen with no entrance ability.
The wooden slats provided a classy finish to the colorbond side fence..
